BEDFORD -- A three-member federal team is visiting the financially troubled National D-Day Memorial as it assesses whether it is suitable to be a national monument.
A statement by the memorial says the National Park Service started its feasibility study with the two-day visit that began yesterday.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar asked for the Park Service's assessment.
Virginia's congressional delegation has asked Salazar for a presidential proclamation to turn the private memorial over to the federal government.
The president of the foundation that runs the memorial, William McIntosh, says the memorial to the Allied landing in Normandy, France, during World War II is on the verge of closing.
