A Dinwiddie County woman died yesterday after her car was struck by a utility trailer that came unhitched from another vehicle.

Virginia State Police reported that Caitlyn L. Johnson, 20, died at VCU Medical Center. Johnson had been flown to the hospital after the accident about noon on U.S. 1 in Dinwiddie.

A state police spokesman said Johnson's 8-month-old child also was in the vehicle. The child was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center for evaluation and later released to family members.

Johnson was traveling north in a car when the vehicle was struck by a utility trailer that came unhitched from a southbound sport utility vehicle, police reported.

A 17-year-old who was driving the SUV was charged with reckless driving. Police did not release the driver's name.

Police last night were investigating why the utility trailer came unhitched.

State police reported two other fatalities yesterday on Virginia roads. A Henrico County man died about 2 a.m. when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and it overturned on state Route 631 in Charles City County.

Police identified the victim as Teicher T. Thomas, 38. He was not wearing a seat belt, police reported.

State police also reported that Christopher D. Ray, 22, of Capron died early yesterday after an accident on state Route 671 in Southampton County.

Police said Ray was driving a car and swerved to avoid a tree in the road, lost control and overturned. He was pronounced dead at Southampton Memorial Hospital about 7 a.m.

The three fatalities bring Virginia's total for 2009 to 475, compared with 559 at this time in 2008. -- John Reid Blackwell
