Wayne Turnage, chief of staff to Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, is a finalist to take on that same role in the Office of the President at Virginia Commonwealth University.
According to a notice sent out by the school, "one finalist has been invited back to VCU for further interviews," and the school will conduct open forums on the academic and medical campuses Monday so that students, faculty and staff can meet him.
Turnage confirmed this afternoon that he is a finalist for the job, which includes, among other things, advising President Michael Rao on institutional issues and operations and coordinating the governance and leadership activities over which Rao presides.
In his current role, Turnage runs the day-to-day operations of the governor's office.
Turnage said he was notified this week that he is a finalist for the post, which VCU launched a national search to fill.
If he gets the job, he would start after the Kaine administration ends on Jan. 16.
The VCU job description "correlates very well" with what he is doing now, but on a different scale, Turnage said.
And his references likely won't hurt. At the top? Gov. Kaine.
