Richmond-area leaders called on Congress today to appropriate an additional $4 billion for high-speed rail service.
The $4 billion would be in addition to President Barack Obama's $8 billion "downpayment" in economic stimulus funding for high-speed rail.
Virginia has asked for $1.75 billion to upgrade the Richmond-Washington rail corridor for high-speed service. Such train service would reduce congestion, aid economic development, create jobs and cut pollution, said Daniel L. Plaugher of Virginians for High Speed Rail.
Speaking at a press conference today at Main Street Station in downtown Richmond were Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones, Greater Richimond Chamber CEO Kim Scheeler and Jack Berry, president and CEO of the Richmond Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau.
