The latest forecast calls for 6 to 8 inches of snow in the Richmond area from Friday night to Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
"I would say this is a fairly significant storm for this early in the winter season," said James Foster, a weather service meteorologist.
Parts of western Virginia could get up to 12 inches, Foster said. Southeastern Virginia might get a couple of inches but should mostly get rain.
Meanwhile, David Tolleris, a commercial weather forecaster in Chesterfield County, said the storm could produce 10 inches and perhaps as much as 20 inches of snow in this area.
The record December snow in Richmond was 17 inches in 1908. The overall record was 21.6 inches in January 1940.
