The House Finance Committee voted 19-2 today for a bill that would allow developers to build a new baseball stadium using part of the sales taxes generated by the stadium and surrounding development.
The bill would use 2.5 percent of the sales tax derived from the new facility and attached buildings.
The bill had been sought by developers pitching a ballpark for Shockoe Bottom. It was expanded to include a baseball facility to be built anywhere in the city.
At Mayor Dwight C. Jones' request, the developers pitching a minor league ballpark for Shockoe Bottom have pushed their deadline to get preliminary city approval from March 1 to Aug. 1. The ballpark's targeted opening is in 2012.
