If a compromise bill to ban smoking in restaurants and bars in Virginia passes the House of Delegates next week, it won't go into effect until Oct. 1.
The House General Laws Committee today voted 9-4 to delay the effective date of the ban from July 1 until Oct. 1 to give restaurants and bars more time to comply with the provisions of the law.
Anti-smoking activists have criticized the bill as being weak; the restaurant lobby says it amounts to government meddling.
