A House of Delegates subcommittee today killed a proposal to establish a bipartisan redistricting commission in Virginia.
The commission would have drawn new boundaries for congressional and legislative districts after the 2010 census.
The 4-2 vote of the Privileges and Elections subcommittee was along party lines, with all four Republicans voting to kill the measure.
At a news conference afterward, Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, the sponsor, said that if he is elected governor, he would use his power to establish the commission.
He said he was dismayed that four members of the House could kill a bill that passed the Senate by a 39-0 vote.
The subcommittee also voted to kill Democrat-sponsored measures that would allow early voting in Virginia and no-excuse absentee balloting.
Deeds is one of three Democrats who are seeking the party's nomination for governor in a June 9 primary.
