The Virginia House of Delegates today insisted on its amendments to weaken a ban on smoking in restaurants and bars.
Its action on Senate Bill 1105, sponsored by Sen. Ralph S. Northam, D-Norfolk, sends the bill to a bipartisan conference committee that will negotiate a compromise.
Northam's bill would bar smoking in public eateries that do not have a separate ventilated room for smokers who want to light up.
The House wants to amend the bill to allow smoking in restaurants and bars that are off-limits to minors, and in areas of restaurants that are separated by a door.
