A bill that would require some people who purchase guns from private sellers at gun shows to submit to criminal background checks advanced in the state Senate today.
Senate Bill 1257, sponsored by Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, D-Richmond and Sen. Janet D. Howell, D-Fairfax, passed by voice vote on its second reading before the full chamber. It could come up for a final Senate vote tomorrow.
Currently, people who purchase weapons from private sellers at gun shows may do so without undergoing a criminal background check. Those who purchase weapons from licensed dealers must undergo background checks.
The bill under consideration would exempt concealed weapons permit holders from having to undergo a criminal background check for their purchases at gun shows. Purchasers of antique firearms would also be exempted.
The amended bill narrowly passed the Senate Courts of Justice committee by an 8-7 vote. If approved by the full Senate, the bill will head to the House, where it is not expected to survive.
