The Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is establishing a fund in honor of Black Dog, an endearing stray dog that roamed Richmond's West End neighborhoods for nearly two decades.
Black Dog was found last week near Cary Street and Maxwell Road, apparently fatally struck by a car, and was buried on private property in Buckingham County.
The Richmond SPCA will use the contributions for spay and neuter surgeries on dogs that were strays prior to coming to the SPCA or into the care of Richmond Animal Care and Control.
A dog run at the humane center will be dedicated to the memory of Black Dog as a memorial to his spirit and the respect and love he inspired in so many people, said Robin Starr, executive director of the SPCA.
"As a Windsor Farms resident for more than 20 years, I saw Black Dog many times and even had him walk along behind me and my dog on walks upon occasion," Starr said.
"He was a truly remarkable spirit, and I am happy that we have found a way to honor that here at the Richmond SPCA."
Area residents fed the dog, protected him from animal-control efforts to capture him and left garage doors open in winter so he could have refuge. But no one, or so the stories go, could get near the legendary dog.
