Richmond police were searching today for the person believed to be responsible for robbing two women in the Fan District early this morning, injuring both of them.
One woman was shot and the other was knocked to the ground in separate assaults that occurred between 1:20 and 1:25 a.m. in the 100 block of Strawberry Street, Capt. Harvey S. Powers said.
The woman who was knocked to the ground was taken to Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of bumps and bruises; the woman who was shot was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of injuries that Powers said also were not life-threatening.
A detailed suspect description was not immediately available.
Powers said the first assault was a purse-snatching that occurred when the victim was confronted on the street and ended with her being knocked to the ground.
A few minutes later and a short distance away, the same suspect is believed to have robbed another woman on the street, shooting her once, Powers said.
The suspect fled on foot from the scene, which is near the Floyd Avenue intersection.
Powers said the initial investigation does not indicate any ties between this morning's robberies and recent attacks in the Fan District.
"To draw this connection to anything else, that's going to take a lot more looking at," he said. "There's nothing connecting it to anything else that I heard anybody mention."
