Henrico County's 2026 Comprehensive Plan will be more supportive of agriculture and open space, if supervisors follow staff recommendations in regard to public comments on the plan.
Joe Emerson, county planning director, introduced the suggested revisions at a work session today.
Of the 35 speakers at the June public hearing on the plan, the majority were Varina residents with variations on the theme of "Don't turn Varina into another Short Pump." Supervisors will vote on the comprehensive plan next month.
In the suggested revisions, agriculture got official support as one of the county's economic objectives.
Planners also proposed rural keystone policies to encourage creative and niche agriculture such as farmer's markets and agri-tourism; to minimize erosion and water contamination; and to maintain rural character.
Other revisions would increase open space requirements in two new zoning categories. Suburban mixed-use projects would need a minimum of 15 percent open space. Traditional neighborhood development would have a minimum of 20 percent open space. -- Katherine Calos
