A man was arrested early today and charged with his role in the alleged fatal shooting of an elderly man nearly two years ago just north of Richmond's Byrd Park.
Derrell R. Brown, 23, was taken into custody following a standoff at a North Richmond apartment, and police were investigating the possibility that he fired shots at officers before his arrest. No one was injured.
Brown was arraigned later this morning by Richmond General District Judge David E. Cheek Sr., who ordered him held without bond on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
Authorities believe Brown shot to death Joseph Wynn, 74, at a house in the 2000 block of Maplewood Avenue on Aug. 24, 2007. The late-afternoon shooting occurred in Wynn's house, which police described as a "nip joint" -- a place where alcohol is sold illegally.
Police said officers responded to a call for assistance at an apartment in the 4200 block of Old Brook Road shortly before 9 p.m. and believed Brown was inside.
Police, who had warrants charging Brown with felony larceny, brandishing a firearm and property damage, waited to see if he came out, and eventually, two people left the building and drove off, so two officers followed in an unmarked vehicle.
Police said shots were fired at the officers' vehicle while they were in the 4200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, which runs parallel to Old Brook, one block to the west. The shots, according to police, did not come from the vehicle being followed by police.
The officers were not injured and did not discharge their weapons, police said.
Police pulled over the vehicle, only to find that Brown was not inside, so they returned to the apartment and began negotiations. Brown surrendered early this morning without incident and was later charged with Wynn's slaying.
Police said they suspect Brown is the person who fired at officers after they drove from the apartment, but they are continuing their investigation.
