NORFOLK -- Norfolk State University officials say they will eliminate or freeze 31 positions to help cover $6.2 million in state funding reductions, but nobody will be laid off.
Officials said today that the school will save nearly $3 million by cutting administrative and classified positions through attrition and by freezing openings.
The school plans to save another $2.5 million by cutting discretionary spending, including equipment purchases.
In December, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced that all four-year institutions would take a 15 percent cut in state funding to fill a nearly $3 billion budget hole.
Norfolk State's $144.8 million budget takes effect in July. -- The Associated Press
