The state of Virginia is partnering with computer giant Microsoft to offer free technology training and skills certification to thousands of displaced workers in the commonwealth.

Working with the Virginia Community College system, Microsoft’s “Elevate America” program will provide 5,000 vouchers for online training, 5,000 vouchers for online testing and 1,250 vouchers for advanced training in one of the programs in the Microsoft Office Suite.

“This partnership will provide thousands of Virginians with the technology skills they need to attain and sustain employment as the economy recovers,” Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said in a statement announcing the partnership at the Capital Region Workforce One-Stop Center in south Richmond.

The training vouchers can be applied to community college classes in subjects such as Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook. The testing vouchers are redeemable for an assessment that will constitute certification in a particular computer skill with each passing grade. The advanced training vouchers will be applied to professional career development areas such as web site development and database management.

The vouchers will be available on a first come, first served, basis beginning today through Virginia’s workforce centers and community colleges.
