A possible successor to the embattled chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia is not interested in the job.
Former Del. Paul Clinton Harris Jr., R-Albemarle, is declining requests to seek the post should Del. Jeffrey M. Frederick, R-Prince William, be ousted next month or quit.
"While the opportunity to serve as leader of the Republican Party during these challenging times is compelling, now is not the right time for me to run for party chairman," Harris said in an e-mail.
Backed by gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, members of the Republican Party's governing body are moving to dump Frederick at its April 4 meeting.
Frederick's opponents say they have the required three-quarters vote of the central committee -- 58 of 77 members -- to remove him after nine months as chairman. Frederick says he has sufficient support to survive.
Republicans, who failed in a December effort to boot Frederick, fault him for the party's vast losses in November; his remarks linking President Obama to accused terrorists and for using his political consultantcy to redesign the Virginia GOP Web site.
