Richmond authorities continue to investigate a shooting over the weekend at Monroe Park and several robberies in the Virginia Commonwealth University area.
Police said yesterday that there has been no arrest in a nonfatal shooting early Sunday at the park. A man was shot in the back after two groups exchanged words. No VCU students were involved in that incident.
Also, no arrest has been made in a series of four street robberies in a period of three hours Friday around the VCU campus, according to Richmond police spokeswoman Karla Peters.
Three of the robberies involved student victims. Police have said they believe the four robberies were committed by the same man, who displayed a knife in three of the incidents.
In addition, police are still investigating a series of eight robberies in the Fan District or on its outskirts from Jan. 13 through Feb. 8. Students were victims in seven of the eight cases. Authorities said last month that they had charged a man in connection with two of the eight robberies.
VCU officials report 12 robberies or attempted robberies so far in 2009, compared with three over the same period last year. Eight of this year's cases involved student victims.
Peters and university spokeswoman Pamela Lepley said Richmond and VCU police are working together. They declined to discuss any specific measures being taken to prevent crime around campus.
