Former Democratic delegate Bennett of Halifax says he's running again

W.W. " Ted" Bennett wants to return to the state Capitol.

The former Democratic delegate from Halifax County in Southside is seeking the Democratic nomination to replace Del. Clarke N. Hogan, R-Halifax, who recently announced he would not seek re-election to focus on his business.

When Hogan announced, Bennett said, "I felt there was a need."

"At first I was concerned about the representation we would have in his absence and at the time, felt we needed an experienced person and I'd had 12 years in the General Assembly," he said.

Bennett faces a primary battle with David M. Guill, a member of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, who has filed his certificate of candidate qualification with the State Board of Elections.

The district covers Halifax and Charlotte counties as well as parts of Prince Edward and Nottoway counties.

Hogan, a budget negotiator in his fourth term, is ending his legislative career to focus on his lumber company, Ontario Hardwood in Keysville. Once he joined the legislature in 2002, Hogan quickly rose through the ranks and landed a spot on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
