Virginia State Police today released new information on a helicopter crash last night on Walmsley Boulevard in Richmond that left three people with minor injuries.
Authorities said the 1993 Robinson Beta two-seater took off from Richmond International Airport headed for Lunenburg County, where the pilot and his passenger both live.
The chopper was about 900 feet in the air when it experienced engine problems about 9:15 p.m., police said. The helicopter hit some power lines on its descent, and the propeller struck the hood of a car that was traveling on Walmsley Boulevard near Atlantic Avenue, said state police Sgt. Tom Cunningham.
Police identified the pilot and owner of the chopper as Paul D. Jackson, 46, of the 4000 block of Traffic Road near Victoria, and his passenger as Jamie Long, 35, of the 1500 block of Hardy Road in Lunenburg.
Driving the car was George Mallory Smith, 54, of the 3700 block of Bonmark Drive in Richmond. He was wearing a seat belt.
Smith and the two men in the helicopter were taken to VCU Medical Center with minor injuries, Cunningham said.
The helicopter wreckage remains at Richmond International as the investigation into the crash continues.
State police are assisting the Federal Aviation Administration in the investigation, and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
