A storage area of the new Bogart's restaurant just south of Richmond's Fan District was damaged in a pre-dawn fire today.
There were no injuries in the fire and there was no major damage to the main restaurant building in the fire, which was reported at 5:27 a.m. and took about 15 minutes for Richmond firefighters to bring under control.
The damage was largely confined to a large storage shed that backs up to the alley behind the restaurant at 1903 W. Cary St.
There were heavy flames showing from the storage shed when the first crews arrived, but firefighters were able to limit the fire to making just minor penetration into the main building, Battalion Chief Melvin Carter said.
"This could have been ugly," he said.
Carter said it was uncertain what caused the fire.
He estimated damages at about $20,000.
Bogart's opened in a one-story building at the Cary Street location in late February because the restaurant's longtime home on Lombardy Street in the Fan District closed last April when its lease expired.
