Tilahun Regassa, a 19-year-old Ethiopian; and Amane Gemeda, his 26-year-old countrywoman, captured the men's and women's championships in this morning's 10th running of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K.
Regassa won the men's race in 28:21. He finished 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Alene Reta of Ethiopia. Gemeda won the women's event in 32:37, nearly a minute faster than former Virginia Commonwealth University All-American Maria-Elene Calle.
Anne Parker, a mother of four from Midlothian, won the $2,500 AT&T Dash for Cash. Parker, given a 2.7-mile head start, crossed the finish line in 25:35.
More than 32,000 runners signed up for this year’s race, the 10th anniversary of the Monument Avenue 10K. They were joined along the race route by an estimated 50,000 spectators.
Runners and their fans headed after the race to a huge post-race bash in Monroe Park.
