Del. Jeff Frederick of Prince William County said today he would not be a candidate for chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia and asked his supporters to oppose the candidacy of the newly named chairman, Pat Mullins.
Mullins was elected chairman by the state central committee Saturday. But the party must choose a chairman at the state convention May 29-30. Mullins is running for that post. So far, no one has stepped forward to run against him.
"As for my replacement, I would encourage you to oppose the anointed choice of the SCC (state central committee)," Frederick said.
The party’s state central committee ousted Frederick as party chairman last month. Party leaders felt Frederick had done a poor job at fundraising and did not work well with the party’s presidential candidate, John McCain.
Frederick has blamed his ouster on party insiders and said he had the support of the grassroots.
In a lengthy e-mail today, Frederick said, “I recognize that I was not the perfect chairman. I made my share of mistakes. But I also face a small, yet vocal and influential group who were determined to see me fail and committed to my removal from the day of my election.”
Frederick said he planned to take a break from public and partisan office, but “it won’t be a long sabbatical.”
No one has surfaced yet to oppose Mullins, a longtime party activist who lives in Louisa County.
