Boat slips within view of the downtown skyline are available now for lease at the Village at Rocketts Landing.
After Rocketts residents took the first 15 slots in the first two weeks, the marina's other 25 boat slips on the James River are now available to anyone, said Jason Vickers-Smith, vice president for WVS, developer of the property.
The spaces cost $3,600 to $5,400 for an annual lease, depending on the size of the slip, and $345 to $510 on a monthly basis.
The marina offers water and marine sanitary pump-outs as part of the rent. Hookups for electrical power are charged separately. A fueling dock will be added next year.
A marina has been one of the selling points since Rocketts Landing first advertised the project three years ago, Vickers-Smith said. The first condos were occupied in 2007.
"The river itself is a big draw," he said, "walking along it, looking at it, kayaking, canoeing, boating. We have a couple of residents who really like to fish off the land. We have a number of people who've had boats but have never been able to keep them where they live in Richmond."
Having a boat is a new proposition for Donnell C. Brantley, 60, a New York retiree. She was excited yesterday to take delivery of a Maxum 2900 SE sports cruiser at the marina.
"This is all brand new," she said. "We were just thinking, 'The slip is here and this is a new lifestyle. Let's take advantage of it.'"
Vickers-Smith said he's pleased to complete the lengthy permit process and open the marina. The Virginia Marine Resources Commission approved a permit for the full, 87-slip marina in September. The first phase will account for $2 million of the project's eventual $4.3 million cost.
"It's rewarding to get it done and open," he said. "I think we're in a good place in leasing, knowing that it's not the best economy, to have it getting toward half filled and only open two weeks." -- Katherine Calos
