BURNT CHIMNEY -- A crane operator was killed earlier today after his machine fell off a barge into Smith Mountain Lake.

Capt. Patrick Meeks of Franklin County's Department of Public Safety says divers recovered the body of 54-year-old Roger Dale Goad of the community of Henry in about 60 feet of water today.

Meeks said Goad was working for a company that was replacing a dock in the Blackwater section of the lake.

He said the accident happened about 11:30 a.m. Goad's body was recovered about two hours later.

Meeks said crews tomorrow will try to retrieve the crane, which weighs nine to 10 tons. -- The Associated Press
