Two Henrico students arrested after fight

Two Henrico County students were arrested yesterday after a fight on a school bus that spilled into the street and a resident's yard and involved a third student and two parents.

The incident started after a 12-year-old Brookland Middle School student boarded her assigned bus shortly after 8 a.m. at Calloway Road and Harrison Avenue, near West Broad Street in western Henrico, said Henrico police Lt. Doug Perry. The 12-year-old sought out a 15-year-old girl already on board and began to assault her, Perry said.

Moments later, a 14-year-old Mount Vernon Middle School boy boarded the bus and joined in the assault. At one point during the fight, the 14-year-old acquired a knife, but the 12-year-old girl took it from him, Perry said.

"As this was going on, the 12-year-old's mother attempted to board the bus and then got into a physical altercation with the mother of the 15-year-old girl," Perry said.

The bus driver intervened and refused to open the main door. The 14-year-old left the bus through the rear emergency door. The 12-year-old kicked the front door until it broke and opened, Perry said.

The fight then spilled out into the street and into a yard in the 2900 block of Calloway Drive, where the 15-year-old girl lived. The 14-year-old male threw a chair through the front window of the home and hit the 15-year-old girl's sister in the head, Perry said.

The 14-year-old then ran around the side of the house carrying the knife and broke out the window of a side door as he tried kicking it in, but he didn't gain entry, Perry said.

Police arrived and restored order. There were no apparent injuries to any of the students, Perry said.

The 14-year-old boy was charged with attempted breaking and entering, possession of a weapon on school property, two counts of assault and battery, two counts of vandalism and two counts of unlawfully stopping someone to call 911.

The 12-year-old girl was charged with vandalism, assault and battery, and possession of a weapon on school property.

"It's been an ongoing dispute between the two girls," Perry said of the two female students involved in yesterday's incident.
