Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones is jumping in to try to sway next Tuesday's special election for the open 7th District seat on the City Council.
After weeks of speculation, Jones is endorsing Cynthia I. Newbille in the six-candidate race to represent the East End.
In a recorded phone message that went to district households Tuesday, Jones encourages people to vote for Newbille. Another round of calls is expected next week.
"I'm very appreciative of the mayor's support and am looking forward to working with our mayor," said Newbille, who served as chief of staff to City Manager Calvin D. Jamison before the city switched to an elected-mayor form of government in 2005.
Newbille also is supported by Jones allies Del. Delores L. McQuinn and state Sen. Henry L. Marsh III.
Seventh District candidate Garry F. Powell said his home received one of the calls. He acknowledged that Jones has a right to support whomever he wants but said he wished that the mayor had talked to all of the candidates before making a selection.
"Doesn't it lead to a little friction if his candidate doesn't get elected?" Powell added.
The other candidates are Ronald L. Bond, Clarence Kenney, Deanna Lewis and Robin D. Robinson.
