Kaine travel log shows he was out of state part of 7 days in August

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was out of the state for at least part of seven days in August, according to a travel log released last night by his office.

"The dates represent a combination of state work, work in his role as chairman of the Democratic National Committee and personal time," according to Kaine spokesman Gordon Hickey, who would not give any more detail on how much of Kaine's travel was national political business or personal.

Of the time Kaine spent in-state in August, some was set aside for vacation in Virginia Beach with his family, as well as a meeting with the Southern Governors' Association in Williamsburg.

Republicans have attempted to make an issue of Kaine's Democratic chairmanship, saying it's evidence that his attention is split between national politics and state business, including balancing Virginia's recession-wracked budget.

According to the released schedule, Kaine was in Richmond and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., on Aug. 1 and in Nantucket and Richmond the next day. He spent part of Aug. 20 in New Jersey, part of Aug. 25 in Washington, D.C., and a portion of Aug. 27 in Louisville.

He traveled the next day to Nashville and Birmingham as well, according to the release. He was in Birmingham and then back to Richmond on Aug. 29.
