Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell said today that if elected governor, he'd use the powers available to him to fight so-called card check legislation, which would help unions organize by foregoing a secret ballot.
"I'll use every resource of my office to speak out strongly on behalf of the business community, and against card check," McDonnell said on a conference call with the Virginia Manufacturers Association and a couple of business owners opposed to the legislation.
"We'll use every possible political resource to fight card check, which I think is important and I think that will, in the long term, serve Virginia businesses well," McDonnell said before clicking off without taking any questions.
McDonnell, a former state attorney general, has been trying to link the issue to his rival, Democratic gubernatorial nominee R. Creigh Deeds, who has union backing. Deeds says the issue is federal, not a state one.
"While others have said that it is a federal issue and doesn't affect Virginia and there's nothing they can do about it, I think that's absolute nonsense," McDonnell said in today's call. -- Olympia Meola
