Local real estate development firm owner Charlie Diradour is expected to launch a bid tomorrow for the Democratic nomination in the district now represented by House Republican whip Rep. Eric I. Cantor.

Diradour, a graduate of Trinity Episcopal School and Virginia Commonwealth University, plans to issue a formal statement tomorrow morning entering the race in the Virginia's 7th Congressional District, sources told The Times-Dispatch this afternoon.

Cantor was elected in 2000 to represent the 7th and has quickly risen in the ranks of House of Representatives Republican leadership. He's now the number two Republican. The seat is up for election in November 2010.

Paul Goldman, a former candidate for Richmond City Council and a policy adviser to former Mayor L. Douglas Wilder, said Diradour has been involved in local politics but this is his first run for office.

"He's a very talented guy," Goldman said. "I think he'd be a very strong candidate."
