President Barack Obama today nominated Virginia Supreme Court Justice Barbara Keenan to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Virginia's two U.S. senators, Democrats Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner, had recommended Keenan.
"Her commitment to fairness and judicial integrity has been unwavering throughout her career . . . ," Obama said in a statement released by the White House.
Keenan has served on the Virginia Supreme Court since 1991. In 1980 she was elected to the general district court of Fairfax County.
"Justice Barbara Keenan is the ideal combination of intellect and judicial temperament," Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said. "With her impeccable credentials and experience in multiple Virginia courts, Justice Keenan is well-suited for a judgeship in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals."
