The Richmond Times-Dispatch is following an industry trend and reducing the size of the pages upon which the newspaper is printed.
The narrower page size is becoming the standard among U.S. newspapers. This makes it easier for advertisers to place ads in multiple markets. In addition, this size helps all newspapers conserve newsprint and ink. By saving money on paper -- one of the biggest line items in our budget -- we will be positioning ourselves to add content as the economy rebounds.
For the next two days, the size of the paper will not change as we use up our inventory of larger newsprint rolls. In today's paper, you will notice that the image area itself is smaller and that there is more white space around the image area.
Beginning Wednesday, we will print the paper on pages that are one inch narrower than the current paper (11 inches instead of 12). The length of the page will not change.
Although the size of the pages will be reduced, we have made as few changes to our design and content as possible. We will not be cutting any standing features, and we will also not be making any changes to our type.
Among the significant changes we are making:
- Eight pages have been added to our weekly Channels section, which subscribers can receive each Saturday for an extra 50 cents per week.
- The front of the Find sections have been redesigned and will feature a new index. In addition, the comics and puzzle pages have been reorganized to make them easier to use.
- The movies page in the Weekend section has been tweaked to make more efficient use of space. The movie grid and the movie ads will now be on the same page.
- The photos that run with most paid obituaries will be wider.
- Four stocks have been added to the "Widely Held" listings that are printed Tuesday-Saturday on the Money & Markets page in the Business section.
- Yesterday's temperatures have been deleted from the national cities list on the weather map.
