Henrico County police say a Sandston man threatened to burn down a home, brandished a shotgun at officers and later head-butted a police car and stomped on a kitten as police closed in.
Authorities charged Russell Scott Austin, 35, of Huntsman Road, with two felony charges: threatening to burn a home and possession of a gun by a convicted felon.
They also charged him with four misdemeanors: brandishing a firearm, domestic assault with a gun, vandalism and animal cruelty.
The trouble started sometime before 11 Friday night, when Henrico police received a call to the 300 block of Taylor Road reporting a domestic incident involving a disorderly person, said Henrico police Lt. Jim Price.
Price said Austin threatened to burn down the home and to kill the people who were there with a shotgun, prompting them to flee.
When police arrived, the man emerged from the back of the home, shouted profanities and brandished the shotgun at an officer.
Austin fled into some woods, and officers tried unsuccessfully to find him using a tracking dog and an aircraft, Price said. They found him early this morning at a friend’s nearby home and tried to arrest him.
"He became belligerent at that point," Price said.
The suspect repeatedly rammed his head into a police car, causing several hundred dollars’ worth of damage to the vehicle, Price said.
Austin also stomped on a calico kitten, leaving it with severe injuries, Price said.
