Arson suspect said to admit role in first fire

A man arrested for setting a third fire at an Ashland motel has told investigators he also was responsible for the first fire there that all but destroyed the facility.

"We are executing search warrants now to determine if his statements are accurate," Hanover Battalion Chief William Jones said this afternoon.

Jose Antonio Ramirez, 23, was observed setting a third fire at a Super 8 motel in Ashland early Saturday morning, but under questioning also claimed setting an initial fire there Dec. 11 that caused $1 million in damage and displaced 30 people, authorities said.

Jones stressed that investigators are trying to confirm Ramirez' actual identity. The address he gave authorities is that of the motel.

Ramirez is scheduled to for a hearing in Hanover General District Court Tuesday morning.
