HAMPTON -- Hampton University is getting an $8 million grant to build a biomedical research center.

The school was awarded the stimulus grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Officials say construction will begin within the next two months on the 20,000-square-foot center, which is expected to open next summer.

The university says the facility will be a hub of research for the school's nursing, pharmacy and science programs. The research will include issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, adolescent health, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease.

The center will create professional and technical jobs, develop minority scientists and create a diverse work force.
