No injuries were reported this morning when three manhole covers blew off their frames on a downtown Richmond street.
The explosions, which occurred about 2 a.m. in the 300 block of East Franklin Street, initially appeared to be related to gas buildup in a sewer line, but authorities later said they were traced to an electrical transformer malfunction.
Authorities said there was a small fire that occurred with the first explosion, and fire crews were extinguishing those flames when two other covers blew toward the other end of the block. There were no fires related to the second set of blown covers.
Public utilities crews responded to the scene.
No vehicles or buildings were damaged by the explosions, flying manhole covers or fire, authorities said.
