The American Indian sculpture at The Diamond appears headed to the Lucky Strike power plant building on Richmond's Tobacco Row.
The Richmond Metropolitan Authority voted today to accept a proposal from Odell Associates for the sculpture, which is known as "Connecticut." The four-story Lucky Strike building is at 2700 E. Cary St., near Pear Street in Shockoe Bottom, and it overlooks the James River. The deal is pending a sales contract by both parties.
Five other proposals were submitted, including ones that would have placed the sculpture at Henrico, Monacan or Powhatan high schools. The 2,400-pound public artwork by artist Paul DiPasquale has been at The Diamond since 1985, where it served as a symbol of the Richmond Braves baseball team. The Braves relocated to Gwinnett County, Ga., last year.
The RMA decided the sculpture is longer needed with the Richmond Flying Squirrels starting play this spring.
