GRTC's union members have again rejected a tentative labor contract, union and transit company officials said.
The labor union voted yesterday to reject the company's offer, said Deloris Coker, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union's Local 1220.
Both sides said they will meet again with federal mediators to try to reach an agreement.
"For now, business will continue as normal," said John M. Lewis Jr., GRTC's chief executive officer. "In the event of labor action, we will notify you of temporary changes that may occur as a result of this action.'
The bus company’s labor contract expired Oct. 1, and contract talks broke down in January. GRTC and the union's negotiators had reached a tentative agreement on a new, short-term employment contract earlier this month, but this proposal was rejected yesterday.
The union represents 278 members of GRTC’s 492 employees.
The union had asked for an increase in the wage rate for the company’s lower-paid special-transit-vehicle drivers and for a $305 uniform allowance.
GRTC's offer avoided layoffs and pay and benefit cuts, but no raises.
