Roughly $4.6 million in grants will help five Virginia communities fund downtown revitalization projects and improve housing conditions.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine yesterday announced Community Development Block Grant awards for Big Stone Gap, Honaker, South Hill, Emporia and York County.
Since 1982, the federally funded program has provided up to $19 million annually to various communities across the commonwealth.
Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Director Bill Shelton said the latest funding will be used to rehabilitate 67 homes, update water and sewer services, improve the facades of 49 downtown businesses, help implement new farmers markets and update the communities' downtown infrastructure.
