A portion of one of South Richmond's main traffic arteries was blocked this morning for about two hours because of a gas leak.
The westbound lanes of Forest Hill Avenue were blocked just west of Chippenham Parkway shortly after 6 a.m.
While repairs were underway, westbound traffic on Forest Hill was diverted onto Chippenham Parkway or turned around just west of the parkway. Traffic was flowing in both directions again by 8:30.
Richmond police closed the westbound lanes of Forest Hill after a strong odor of natural gas was detected by the sidewalk that runs along the north side of the road.
The leak was immediately in front of the fire station at the Sheila Lane intersection.
