Richmonders still celebrating the election of President Barack Obama need to stop the party and get back to work, Mayor Dwight C. Jones said today.
"Our work is not over," Jones said at the Living the Dream Mass Meeting in honor of the 81st birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.
It’s crucial "not to let our guard down," Jones said to more than 1,000 people at the Arthur Ashe Center, because "the degree of tolerance is at an all-time low."
The morning event, sponsored by the city of Richmond and Richmond Public Schools, was among a day of activities honoring King that include prayer services and a student march across campus at the University of Richmond.
Among other activities, more than 500 students and 130 staff from the Steward School participated in "Paint It Forward" events today at Woodville and Fairfield Court Elementary schools.
Middle and high school students on campus painted murals, cleaned desks and windows, and helped with a teacher's lounge make-over at Woodville. Elementary-age students remained at the Steward School, making bookmarks that will be delivered to both Richmond schools as part of a book club among all three schools.
