In the race for governor, the party nominees spent less money between them than Virginia's 2005 nominees for governor, perhaps a sign of the economic downturn.
Bob McDonnell, the Republican, spent $23,791,007 to Democratic state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds' $17,164,784, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan tracker of money in Virginia politics.
Together, they spent nearly $41 million from 2006 to 2009. The 2005 major-party nominees, Democrat Timothy M. Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore, spent $45 million.
Republican Bill Bolling, who won a second term as lieutenant governor in November spent about $4.36 million on his campaign. His Democratic opponent, Jody M. Wagner, spent nearly $3.39 million.
Republican Ken Cuccinelli prevailed in the campaign for attorney general, even though he was outspent. The former state senator from Fairfax County spent $2.96 million on his campaign. His Democratic opponent, then-Del. Stephen C. Shannon of Fairfax, spent $3.55 million.
In last year's contests for the House of Delegates, the state parties and political action committees associated with state GOP leaders were the biggest donors to candidates.
Next on the list were The Virginia Association of Realtors, which handed out $494,070; The Virginia Dental Association, which contributed $346,860; and the Virginia Bankers Association, which doled out $330,393.
