HAMPTON, Va. — The Hampton School Board and its former superintendent are in dispute over pay.
The school board is suing Patrick Russo for $102,220, claiming he must forfeit money put into a retirement fund for him because he broke his contract with the school division. But Russo is countersuing the board for $300,000, claiming it breached a transition agreement made with him in April 2009.
Russo resigned after accepting a job to lead Henrico County Public Schools. The agreement said he wasn't expected to report to work but would be paid through the end of last June.
According to the suit, the district withheld his paychecks for May and June, and said it would only pay him after he gave back the money from the retirement fund.
A trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 17.
