Richmond mayor wants new jail on current site

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones today said the city has accepted the conceptual proposals made by four groups to replace the current City Jail but also said the city would restrict the plans to the current jail site on Fairfield Way.

Jones invited the groups to submit detailed proposals for the estimated $137 million project, but as part of that, the city has specified that the detailed proposals be made for the current site in Shockoe Bottom. Council members support the mayor's plan.

In March, the city accepted an unsolicited proposal by City Central LLC to design and build a new jail. Three other groups now are vying for the project.
