The ACLU of Virginia is participating in a national effort to obtain records related to the FBI's collection and use of race and ethnicity data.
The group says it asked the FBI's offices in Richmond and Norfolk on Tuesday to turn over the information. The move was part of a coordinated Freedom of Information Act request by 32 ACLU affiliates in more than two dozen states.
The ACLU says FBI agents have the authority to collect information about and map "ethnic-oriented" businesses, behaviors, lifestyle characteristics and cultural traditions in communities with concentrated ethnic populations.
