GRTC Transit System has won the acclaim of its peers for helping to pioneer a new way of talking about the merits of public transit.
The Virginia Transit Association, a nonprofit association of 57 public transportation companies and other businesses, presented GRTC with its Outstanding Program Award for a Large System this month. The award recognizes the transit company’s role in creating TransitTalk.com last year as a way to promote public transportation in the state.
The program arose from a collaboration between GRTC and Leadership Metro Richmond, as well as a number of local media companies, to advocate policies that promote the expansion and use of public transportation. The resulting Got Transit? Committee produced a catchy video that it distributed through the TransitTalk.com website, as well as social media, print advertising and banners on Yahoo.com.
Nine months later, the TransitTalk program is launching a new campaign, Voices 4 Transit Choices. The program now involves a partnership between GRTC and its Ridefinder program, and Partnership for Smarter Growth, which advocates land-use policies that rely more on public transit and less on private road networks. Its media partners including Richmond, Boomer and Style Weekly magazines.
The program will train people as advocates for public transit in the Richmond region.
