An unmarked 2007 Toyota Camry used by Henrico police had a sudden acceleration event this month after it had been recalled and supposedly repaired.
Henrico police today acknowledged the incident in early March and said the vehicle has been taken off the road along with all other Toyota Camry models in the department.
Henrico Police Lt. Eric Owens said this morning that the incident was the only acceleration incident experienced within the department either before or after Toyota began recalling the vehicles in late February and early March.
He said he could not release information about how many Camrys are owned by Henrico Police.
The vehicle in question was merging into traffic and accelerated slightly above the speed limit before self-correcting, Owens said. There were no damages or injuries It was not clear today how long the vehicles will remain off the road.
