Glitch affects some SunTrust customers briefly

»  Comments | Post a Comment

SunTrust Banks Inc. doled out billions of dollars this past weekend -- or so it seemed.

A Chesterfield County woman discovered $88 billion in her checking account Saturday morning. A businessman in Orlando, Fla., reportedly found $88,888,888,888.88 in his account Friday night.

SunTrust spokesman Barry Koling said the money was not actually in the accounts and that the glitch was fixed within hours. He blamed the problem on a balance-reporting error.

Koling said the 8 key on a computer must have gotten stuck. "That is my nontechnical assumption," he said.

The not-so-lucky recipients may have had trouble for a brief period of time using their debit cards to make a purchase or getting money from an automated teller machine, he said.

"We're talking hours, not days," he said. -- Carol Hazard
