Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones is urging a regional summit to discuss changes in police pursuits that cross jurisdictional lines.
In a letter made public today, a week after a beloved church leader was killed in the midst of a high-speed chase, Jones’ letter to Henrico County Administrator Virgil C. Hazelett urges a review in coming days.
The letter seeks a review of criteria for multijurisdictional pursuits, acceptable speeds, and “for ending a pursuit that crosses” into another locality.
Apostle Anthony L. Taylor, 44, pastor for 18 years of an East End church, died Wednesday night a week ago when his car was struck by a speeding Henrico resident who was being pursued by county police one mile inside city limits.
Darryl M. Harris, 26, whose vehicle struck Taylor’s truck, is being held without bond for allegedly eluding police and involuntary manslaughter..
Jones said in his letter that his office wants officials from Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover to discuss elements of police pursuits.
Taylor will be buried later this week in Charlotte, N.C., his hometown.
