A Richmond man is accused of robbing a census worker at knifepoint last weekend in the city's East End.
Police arrested Demone L. Bankston, 27, of the 2300 block of Bethel Street, soon after Saturday's robbery in the 2500 block of Fairfield Avenue, said police spokesman James Mercante.
Bankston is charged with robbery.
The census taker, police said, was robbed of undisclosed "personal belongings" about 5 p.m., while he was visiting households that either did not receive a 2010 Census form or did not mail one in.
The worker is one of about 780 Census employees in Richmond involved in a door-to-door effort that began May 1 and is expected to last through mid-July, said Tammie McGee, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau.
McGee said that, as far as she knows, Saturday's incident is the only robbery or other attack on a census taker in Virginia since the home visits began. Because of the robbery, McGee said more census takers are being sent out in the Fairfield Court area, where the robbery occurred.
